And as my neighbor gave me a book about a German cyclist named Heinz Helfgen, who cycled around the world in 1951 - my dream was born: doing something adventurous like this. 12 years later, on May 08 in 1998 time was right. With a cycling partner (from whom I fortunately split further on) who joined me at the last second, good mountain bikes, well equipped and full of explore fever I left my hometown Mindelheim (Germany/Bavaria). Each of the bikes weighed 65 - 70 Kg (140 lbs.) - but we got used to it quite fast and had left Germany against all skepticism after short 8 days. We slept in a natural cave in Luxembourg, a farmer took us home in Belgium and we had to rest for a few days in a French youth hostel after a poisonous grub. Quickly we arrived Calais and took the ferry to Dover in order to explore the wet, green and hilly island called England ...

Making this web site was hell of a trip itself (red eyes, headache and weeks in front of the monitor) - so please let me know if it was worth it. And maybe I will continue...
